LUKOIL PARTICIPATES IN THE UN SESSION ON INDIGENOUS ISSUES

PJSC LUKOIL participated in the 16th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held in New York. Invited to participate in the UN General Assembly to mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Company shared its experience in efficient and responsible interaction with the Russian High North peoples, and presented its corporate booklet titled “Preserving Traditions of the North”.
To preserve cultural diversity and social stability, LUKOIL supports the traditional lifestyle of the High North peoples, communicates on a continuous basis with the chiefs of the traditional wildlife management areas and reindeer breeding farms, as well as the local authorities and public organizations. The Company’s financial support made it possible to build residential housing, kindergartens, schools, hospitals, cultural and sports centers in the Khanty-Mansi, Yamalo-Nenets, Nenets Autonomous Districts and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, and to implement educational and health care projects.
LUKOIL has developed and is successfully implementing the 2014-2018 Environmental Program that provides for allocation of 40 billion rubles to mitigate the negative environmental impact and preserve biodiversity, including in the territories of the High North peoples.
The Red Chum medical and social project was highly praised by Mariam Wallet Med Aboubakrine, Chairwoman of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In her speech, she highlighted this LUKOIL’s initiative and proposed to implement it in other territories populated by the indigenous minorities that lack health care infrastructure. The Red Chum project made it possible for the population of the remote Nenets settlements to obtain qualified medical care and get a full health screening.
In 2008 LUKOIL became the first Russian company to join the UN Global Compact, a major international corporate initiative on sustainable development.
In four Russian regions of its presence, LUKOIL operates in the vicinity of the territories traditionally populated by the Khanty, the Mansi and the Nenets.
In 2016 the Company allocated more than 2 billion rubles as part of Cooperation Agreements with the regional administrative authorities. Part of these funds were allocated to support the High North peoples: in particular, around 270 million rubles as part of economic agreements with the chiefs of the traditional wildlife management areas; around 30 million rubles as part of the agreements on social and economic development of reindeer breeding farms.
